The Travel Version of our musical HIDDEN is now available! This is a 1-hour show, with a cast of 7, including a pianist, with limited sets and costumes. It is intended for schools (grades 5-12), senior centers, synagogues, churches, libraries, community centers, etc. The show can be followed by a Q&A with the writers, director and cast, and often Ruth Kapp Hartz herself can participate, either in person or virtually.
Synopsis:
Holocaust survivor Ruth Kapp Hartz shares her story. Renamed Renée as a child to conceal her Jewish identity, she and her family seek refuge with the Fedou family in a French village. Amid mounting danger, the family separates for safety, sending Renée to a Catholic orphanage where silence is oppressive. Mother Superior risks all to hide Jewish children, who narrowly escape being discovered by the Nazis. Renée and her parents survive the war thanks to the bravery of their rescuers. In the present day, Ruth vows to speak out, and the cast unites in songs emphasizing resilience and hope.
The first performance for school groups was at Gratz Theater at the end of May 2025, and the public debut was at the Parkway Central Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia in mid-June 2025. Both were very enthusiastically received.
“This educational opportunity enriched students’ English Language Arts curriculum, complementing their study of The Legacy of Anne Frank and offering a deeply personal first-hand perspective on history. Students were also honored to hear directly from Ruth during a question-and-answer session making this experience both unforgettable and profoundly meaningful. This was more than a field trip — it was a once in a lifetime invaluable lesson in humanity, courage, and the enduring power of stories.” – Carl Sandburg Middle School, Neshaminy School District
